SK Hynix reaches preliminary wage deal with union for 2026

SK Hynix has reached a preliminary agreement with its labor union on 2026 wages and the collective bargaining framework, according to a report by Yonhap News Agency on Aug. 20. The draft deal includes a 6.3% wage increase and a revision to the company’s current Profit Sharing, or PS, system. Under the proposed changes, 40% of the payout would be distributed in cash within the year, while the remaining 60% would be paid in company stock. If the agreement is approved, it would mark another notable adjustment to SK Hynix’s performance bonus structure following a reorganization carried out last year. The report centers on changes to compensation terms and the method of bonus distribution.

Hyundai union stages partial strike over Atlas humanoid robot plans

Hyundai Motor’s labor union has launched a partial strike at the company’s Ulsan complex after talks with management broke down, putting humanoid robots at the center of a factory labor dispute. Workers on day and night shifts left two hours early each day from July 13 to 15, and the union plans to escalate the action to four-hour stoppages from July 20 to 22 after 15 rounds of negotiations failed to produce a deal, according to The Korea Times. The dispute has drawn unusual attention because Hyundai has not yet deployed any Atlas robots at the Ulsan site. The company’s earliest planned introduction of Atlas in a U.S. factory is set for 2028. Even so, the union is moving before large-scale rollout begins, arguing that automation could cut working hours and erode pay. Reports cited in the article say Hyundai plans to deploy more than 25,000 Atlas robots across Hyundai and Kia plants, beginning with U.S. operations in 2028. Reuters also reported that Hyundai finalized a deal on July 16 to acquire full ownership of Boston Dynamics from SoftBank. Analyst estimates cited by Bloomberg and Macquarie suggest Atlas could cost about $130,000 per unit and pay for itself in around two years, with operating costs potentially falling below the U.S. federal minimum wage if unit costs decline to $100,000.
